About Friends of MysteryFriends of Mystery is a non-profit literary/educational organization headquartered in Portland, Oregon. Its purpose is to promote educational study in all realms related to mystery. Members are interested in fiction, true crime, how mysteries are solved, and many other aspects of knowledge that can be included in the term "mystery". We sponsor a series of public meetings, called Bloody Thursdays, publish a newsletter, The Blood-Letter, give an annual award, the Spotted Owl, for the best mystery by a Pacific Northwest author. And, we also sponsor a local reading group. Reading GroupContact Maggie Stuckey at bookgroup@friendsofmystery.com or call Murder By The Book at 503-232-9995. The Friends of Mystery Reading Group meets on the third Wednesday of every month at 7:00 pm at Murder By The Book, 3210 SE Hawthorne in Portland to discuss the selected mystery. Anyone interested in participating is invited to attend. In 2009 we're experimenting with a slightly new way of choosing books; we are working our way through the subgenres at Murder by the Book. The choices for the first six months are: ![]()
A couple of comments: we chose two by the same author (Connelly) deliberately; one is a stand alone and the other part of a well-known series. The group thought it would be interesting to compare the two. We worked hard to choose titles that are readily available, but as always, a selection may change if it turns out to be difficult for the bookstore to obtain copies. And we only chose 6 months' worth, to give us an opportunity to reconsider
whether we like this new mechanism or wish to return to the old free-for-all
way of selecting titles |
